My 100th Post!

Let your light shine before men.

In the same way,

let your light shine before men,

that they may see your good deeds

and praise your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:16

The sun will no more be your light by day,

nor will the brightness of the moon
shine on you,

for the LORD will be your

everlasting light,

and your God will be your glory.

Isaiah 60:19

A famous anonymous prayer written by a Confederate Soldier in the Civil War

I asked God for strength that I might achieve, I was made weak, that I might learn to humbly obey.

I asked for health, that I might do greater things; I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.

I asked for riches, that I might be happy; I was given poverty that I might be wise.

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men; I was given weakness, that I might feel the need for God.

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life; I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.

I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I had hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.  I am, among all, most richly blessed.

God knows what is best for us.  He is never in a hurry and does not have deadlines.  Our God is a HUGE God:  bigger than any problem, sorrow, or hardship.  Go to Him and humbly receive His grace, mercy and love.

God in the Movies – “Inception” The Battle for Your Mind

Sermon by Mark Marsden, St Pauls Presbyterian Church, Ocoee, FL on July 7 and 8, 2012.

This movie is about Cobb (Leonardo DeCaprio), a corporate espionage, who steals secrets from people’s minds from their dreams.  He can then put a thought in a person’s mind that can change that person’s life completely.

This is similar to how spiritual warfare happens.  The word of God, and all of His promises, are that which protect us from satan –“Your word never comes back void.”  We are in a battle right now!  Some excellent verses which help us with this is Ephesians 6: 10-17:

10  Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

11  Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

12  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

13  Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

14  Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

15  and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

16  In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17  Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18  And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

In a nutshell:  Positive trumps Negative every time!  Note the following:

  • Satan knows our mind is the battlefield (Proverbs 23:7, Proverbs 4:23).
  • Solomon knew that what he thought in his heart was who he was, so guard your heart.
  • Satan is the “father of lies.”  You might remember a sour word that was put into your heart as a youth such as:  “your bad,”  “your useless,” “your stupid, etc..”
  • As in the movie, we start to lose touch with what is real, so we create an imaginary world around us.

Ways to combat that happening is to:

  1. Live an abundant life!
  2. Live in reality of the Kingdom.  Romans 1:16 – “I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes:  first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.”
  3. The Gospel is the power of God!  In Ephesians 1: 18-22:  ”

18  I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints,

19  and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,

20  which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

21  far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

22  And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,

 23  which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Nothing compares to the power of God!  He makes us bolder!  Our awesome God “draws a line in the sand, and He says to the devil that you can go this far, but no further!

Paul says, “gird up the loins of your mind.”  Ask God to show us the lies, and identify the lies that the evil one can make us believe.  Replace that lie with the truth–even speak it out loud!  Know who you are “In Christ,” and that you have God’s great favor.  Read the following list of who you are In Christ:

We are the child of God, we resemble God, we are born of God, we are His new creation, we have His righteousness, we have His holiness, we are made in His image ” . . .  we have the mind of Christ.”  I Cor.2:16

Your God is “Gi-normous,” and loves you more

than you’ll ever know!

Deuteronomy 6:5 –

Love the Lord your God with all your heart

and with all your soul

and with all your strength.

St. Francis of Assisi Prayer in the wake of the horrific, senseless shooting in Colorado

Lord, make me be an instrument of Your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt,  faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.

The Lord is My Strength

Psalm 28:7  The Lord is My Strength

The Lord is my strength and my shield;

my heart trusts in him,

and I am helped.

My heart leaps for joy;

and I will give thanks to Him in song.

The Lack of Compassion of the Rich Man and the Reward of the Beggar

 The Rich Man and Lazarus as found in Luke 16: 19 -31

19“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In hell,c where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

25“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

30“‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31“He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
